== Internet2 doesn't "develop technology" ==
It is one of many enablers of the development of technology.
I removed the statment about Internet2 developing technology such as IPv6, multicast, and QoS. These technologies and research has involved hundreds of researchers and perhaps thousands of engineers, much of which predates the existance of Internet2 and most of which had nothing whatsoever to do with Internet2. -- James Sterbenz, EECS/ITTC, The University of Kansas

ADD TO THE HISTORY SECTION:
In 2010, Internet2 received a 62.5M American Recovery and Reinvestment ACT grant [reference https://www2.ntia.doc.gov/grantee/university-corporation-for-advanced-internet-development] that allowed Internet2 to put in place a long term IRU for fiber and upgrade the network with its own DWDM optical network system. Ciena later announced that this was the first 100G nationwide optical network. reference: https://www.ciena.com/insights/case-studies/Internet2-Building-Americas-First-National-100G-Network.html The upgrade to the new optical system was complete in December, 2012.
