Marie Masters (born Marie Mastruserio;[1] February 4, 1941)[2] is an American actress and writer. She is known for playing the role of Susan Stewart on the CBS Daytime soap opera As the World Turns (1968 to 1979, 1986 to 2010). She also worked as a staff writer on ATWT, beginning in 2001.
Early life
[edit]Masters was born on February 4, 1941 in Cincinnati, Ohio.[2] She was raised in Mount Auburn. She attended St. George grade school and graduated from Our Lady of Angels St. Bernard in 1959.[1] She attended Marian College in Indiana after receiving a scholarship to study art history. During her college years, she performed in summer stock plays. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation, she studied acting with Wynn Handman and Uta Hagen. She was hired for a desk job at Women's Wear Daily.[2]
Career

[edit]Masters was featured on several daytime soap operas, including Love of Life and One Life to Live. Her best-known and longest running role was Dr. Susan Stewart on As the World Turns, a role she played from 1968 to 1979 and again from 1986 to 2010.[3] The character of Susan was an alcoholic "homewrecker" during the show's heyday in the 1970s.[4] Susan (and Masters) was again featured as the troublemaker in a front-burner storyline in 1990, when Susan had an affair with town patriarch Dr. Bob Hughes. The storyline was unusual in that all of the actors featured prominently in the story were over 50, yet the affair became a popular, attention-grabbing storyline for nearly a year. Masters was reduced to recurring basis in 2002, but was still seen often during ATWT's final years. She was prominently featured in the 50th anniversary episode of the show in April 2006, as well as the final episode in September 2010.
Other roles
[edit]Masters has been featured on several primetime programs, including Kate and Allie, Law & Order, and Our Group. Masters has been involved with the New York City theater group New Group since its inception in 1993, and has been a director or assistant director for many productions. In 1982, she played District Attorney Helen Murdoch on "One Life to Live", prosecuting Victoria Riley for refusing to reveal a source.
She is also an accomplished writer, having co-written the films Mad Money, "The Special", "Played Out" and "Loveland". For several years, Masters was a member of the writing team at As the World Turns.
Personal life
[edit]Masters is the mother of Grammy award-winning musician Jesse Harris[5] and Jenny Harris, an executive producer of Lou Dobbs Tonight. Masters' son-in-law is CNBC market analyst David Faber.[6]
