Template:N/A interfering with data-sort-value
?
[edit]At the moment, Template:N/A seems to interact poorly with table cells that specify their own data-sort-value
, as the template sets data-sort-value=""
. This is a problem on List of most commonly challenged books in the United States, where the extensive use of the template means that the unlisted books sort to the top, rather than the bottom. Is the template being misused on that page, or should the user be able to define the sort value in the template? EnronEvolvedMy Talk Page 12:26, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
- Not necessarily misused, just not used ideally. {{n/a}} has a
|sort=
parameter, which I suspect could be set to something like|sort=101
to get it to sort under everything else. Primefac (talk) 22:07, 13 June 2024 (UTC)- I didn't know about that parameter. Is it documented anywhere? I couldn't find it in that template's documentation. EnronEvolvedMy Talk Page 12:24, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately that entire template family uses the same documentation, and if any of the templates don't have that parameter it might mean that we give bad advice. Honestly I'm not overly thrilled with said /doc (I think it's too complex and wordy) so I might see about editing it and possibly adding some #switch statements that will trigger to show parameters for the templates that use them... Primefac (talk) 13:27, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Bumping, mainly for my own notes (and to keep it from being archived). Primefac (talk) 13:35, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

Possible new infobox
[edit]I started a discussion about possibly creating a new infobox for multi-sport events such as the Olympics, figured I'd drop a note here since there may be some template-savvy folk who aren't necessarily also editing in that sphere and could possibly give some thoughts. The discussion is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports § Using an infobox directly in the body and if we should make a new template. Thank you. Primefac (talk) 13:28, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
DynamicPageList exclude parent
[edit]Bumping a question on an unimplemented feature for DynamicPageList. Are there any templates on Wikipedia which achieve what I am looking for (see question for explanation)? Tule-hog (talk) 17:43, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
{{Special:Prefixindex/Portal:Science/}}
? But no, modules do not have access to the information necessary to do what you want (namely, generating the list of pages to begin with). Izno (talk) 18:10, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
Can someone help me with Template:Navbox documentation?
[edit]I wanted to improve this template so that it could also be used in subpages for the documentation, but I did not succeed. KimKelting (talk) 17:10, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- You should start ask at the talk page of that template. Also, please test code in the /sandbox version. Gonnym (talk) 17:28, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- I asked on the talk page and I also tested the code in the /sandbox version before asking for help here. KimKelting (talk) 18:08, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- The timestamp of this is after you posted here. Regarding the test, this broke the template in everyway, so if you did test, please request other editors to implement your changes. Gonnym (talk) 18:17, 16 October 2024 (UTC)

Special characters soft redirects
[edit]I was wondering, since both {{wdr}} and {{R with Wikidata item}} exist, could there be the counterpart of {{R from emoji}}? Maybe there's only one case as far as I know and it eventually could be retargeted (see this talk page talk).
I was thinking in reusing {{Contains special characters|emoticon}} based on Dingbat and Non-binary flag, but I'm not sure if that is allowed. But thinking about that template, it could be used for other soft redirects, such as those including Chinese or Japanese alphabet characters, and among other unicodes.
Or should this be raised in WP:RE? Web-julio (talk) 03:00, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- I don't really know or have any sort of opinion here, but please keep pings visible, or indicate the group being pinged – it wasn't clear where it was coming from before checking the page history. Tollens (talk) 03:25, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oh okay, I will be more wise next time. Web-julio (talk) 03:28, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- This issue should be raised at the WikiProject Redirect. voorts (talk/contributions) 04:30, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- If there's only one case, that might not last, then we have no need of a template for it. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 12:38, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- Agreed; rcat templates should generally populate a larger group than a single page. Primefac (talk) 13:44, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
{{R from Unicode character}}
exists for this reason. VanIsaac, GHTV contWpWS 13:53, 17 October 2024 (UTC)- I think the question is about tagging soft redirects, which that template is not for. Tollens (talk) 14:05, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
Splitting discussion
[edit]Started a discussion yesterday regarding Template:Morrissey singles and whether it should be separate. Unlikely to get much attention on a template talk page on its own so I figured I should just reach out for any responses I can get rather than letting it be between two people who probably won't come to a consensus on our own. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 10:14, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- You've already started a discussion, but for future situations, if you feel like a page is hardly watched by editors, sending the template to WP:TFD with a "split" or "merge" request is also valid (that page isn't only for deletions). Gonnym (talk) 10:52, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- Just noting to the previous that I see this as a notification not an attempt at a new discussion. Primefac (talk) 11:13, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
TFD linking discussion
[edit]There is a discussion about changing how we notify users about TFDs. Please join in the conversation. Primefac (talk) 18:45, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
One of these needs renamed
[edit]In looking for Template:Linkedin (for external links), I first came upon Template:LinkedIn (a navbox). So long as you don't need to squint to tell the difference between a capital and lowercase I, I think you should see the dilemma immediately. I'm not sure how to disambiguate either of these, or which should be (if not both), but I do think something definitely needs changed here. Suggestions are welcome. Keep in mind both Template:LinkedIn URL and Template:LinkedIn page also exist, so those titles are not options. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 11:49, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Rename Template:Linkedin to Template:LinkedIn user, replace usages and redirect to Template:LinkedIn. Don't think we need a dab template for two templates. Gonnym (talk) 12:19, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
